Things To Do in Wildwood Crest, NJ

One of the boroughs of Cape May County, NJ, Wildwood Crest is part of the Ocean City metropolitan statistical area.
The borough was originally incorporated in 1910 from portions of Lower Township. Philip Baker further developed the area in the 1910s as a southern extension to the Wildwood resort. The borough’s name originally comes from the city of Wildwood, which was named for the prominence of the area’s wildflowers.
The motels of the area of Wildwood Crest, as well as some of the other buildings, have a distinctive “Doo Wop” or Googie style of architecture that is epitomized by the space-age architectural style that is often considered a retro throwback to the 1950s and 1960s. It was originally coined by the Mid-Atlantic Center For The Arts in the early 1990s, featuring sweeping angles, starbursts, plastic palm trees, bright colors, boomerang shapes, and angular wall and roof styles.
The area is known locally for its shopping, lovely motels, and the view over Sunset Lake. Turtle Gut Park overlooks the Turtle Gut Inlet, which was closed in 1922. Sunset Lake, a body of water once connected to the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the more exciting places to go and is very visually striking.
