Things To Do in Egg Harbor Township, NJ

A township in Atlantic County, NJ, Egg Harbor township receives its name from Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen Mey due to the local meadows being so covered with waterfowl and shorebird eggs that he called it “Eleren Haven,” which translates as Egg Harbor. Geographically, the township, along with all of Atlantic County, is part of the South Jersey region.
Egg Harbor Township’s first mention was as part of Gloucester County in records as far back as 1693, at times being called New Weymouth. The township’s western boundary was properly established in 1761, with the area referred to as Great Egg-Harbour Township. Multiple township pieces were displaced to create new municipalities over time.
The area features three wildlife management areas, two of them in the eastern segment of the township. Malibu Beach WMA is a marshland that covers about 96 acres, includes many migratory species of birds, and is one of the only beaches in New Jersey that permits dogs. The state takes care of and restores these wildlife management areas and supervises them. The Pine Barrens are where much of the growth has happened recently. It is also known as the Pinelands, and it is becoming one of the bustling areas of the state.
