A borough in Cape May County, NJ, Stone Harbor is part of the South Jersey region of the state as well as the Ocean City metropolitan statistical area. It occupies the southern part of Seven Mile Island and its northern neighbor, Avalon. The community always attracts many vacationers from the Mid-Atlantic region and Quebec. Its name comes from an English sea captain named Stone, who sought shelter from a storm in the area.
The area was developed as a beach resort in the late 19th century along the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad line. The community was marketed as a resort destination for a second home to wealthy residents of Philadelphia. Stone Harbor was eventually incorporated as a borough in 1914 from portions of Middle Township. It also gained a portion of Avalon in 1941.
The area is well known for the Seven Mile Beach, the entirety of the island great for walks and enjoying the natural beauty of being right on the Atlantic Ocean. The Wetlands Institute is a nature center featuring exhibits on local marine life and animals of the salt marsh of the area. It offers interactive education programs for all ages.
