Originally part of Egg Harbor Township, Ventnor City was incorporated back in 1903 as an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It is part of the Jersey Shore on Absecon Island, one of the vital and vibrant parts of southern New Jersey.
It was originally under the eye of S. Bartram Richards, the wife of the secretary-treasurer of the Camden and Atlantic Land Company. She suggested that the name “Ventnor” be given to the area, as it was being developed by the company south of Atlantic City. She had recently been to the English seaside resort of the Isle of Wight that bore the same name. The name was officially put on the location in 1889, then incorporated in 1903.
